Was St. Patrick Really Italian?

Every year articles pop up that St. Patrick was in fact not Irish, but Italian.  St. Patrick was born around 432 AD and died around 461 AD.  Story is that St. Patrick was kidnapped at the age of 16 from Rome and was brought to Ireland as a slave. It is well known that St. Patrick was born in Britain to a wealthy Romano-British Family; he was believed to have died on March 17th. During the time of his captivity he worked as a Shepard turning to religion for solace. At this time he became a devout Christian.  Irish folklore tells that one of his ways to explain the Christian doctrine of the trinity was to use a shamrock. St. Patrick preached the Gospel converting thousands of people, and began building churches. Although St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland, anyone can celebrate St. Patrick’s Day as well. However you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day come to Café Mangia in Colchester CT. Enjoy the Luck of the Irish with a Little Italian thrown in!  We offer a wide menu to satisfy everyone’s palate. Come to Café Mangia serving Colchester, Glastonbury, Hebron and Columbia CT for an Italian St. Patrick’s Day meal.

The Italian Experience
Italian food is some of the culinary world’s most celebrated cuisine. Diverse types of bread, variations in pasta, and varying food preparation techniques also differ according to region. The southern regions of Italy embrace the hard-boiled spaghetti, while the north often prefers a soft egg noodle. Milan is known for their risotto, while Bologna has a deep history regarding tortellini, and Naples is famous for their pizzas. Coastal regions are known for their delicious fish and seafood recipes. Today, the differences in Italian cooking still shows in distinctions between the North and the South. Mangia Martini’s
The definition of a Martini is a cocktail made from Gin or Vodka and dry vermouth, typically garnished with an olive or twist of lemon. While this definition is not wrong, it is somewhat outdated. While the original Martini was made of a simple composition, they have evolved and substantially and are now mixed with various delicacies. Café Mangia is no stranger to the world of fabulous Martini’s. We offer a Classic Martini through complex mixed wonders. Some of our favorites are the Delightful Lemoncello Martini, which features vodka, Lemoncello, lemon juice, and simple syrup served with a sugar rim and lemon slice. Or the Italian Job Martini, which features vanilla vodka, Cointreau, orange juice, sour mix and a splash of Grand Marnier, served with a lemon and lime slice. Whether you are in the mood for a simple classic or seeking to entertain a new experience to your martini palate Café Mangia will have something for you. Café Mangia serves Salem, CT and all surrounding CT towns. Visit our restaurant and bar located at 68 Linwood Avenue Colchester, CT or call 860-537-7707 to make your next dinner reservation. The Birth of Brunch

Ever wonder where this meal came from? Every Sunday people all over the world go toe to toe in anticipation to secure brunch reservations at their favorite restaurants. Perhaps they are celebrating a special occasion such as Mother’s Day or a Birthday of a friend. In many cases, patrons simply want to enjoy a lazy Sunday morning enjoying a mimosa and wide variety of culinary traditions. Who says you need a special occasion to enjoy a smorgasbord of goodies? When did people start subjecting themselves to Sunday’s little slice of heaven? Some historians think that brunch has its roots in Catholic tradition where Catholics would fast before mass then sit down to a large midday meal. While others believe it is an English tradition to have a lavish spread after a hunt. Where ever the actual origin of Brunch came from it started to catch fire in the United States in the 1930’s supposedly because of Hollywood stars making transcontinental train trips stopping off to enjoy a late morning meal. Eventually it was nurtured by Hotels; when for a time many restaurants were closed on Sundays. Restaurants soon hopped onto the bandwagon and began offering decadent spreads of delicious cuisines and signature mid -morning cocktails. These days a Brunch is a simple way to relax, eat well and socialize with good company. Café Mangia of Colchester, CT offers locals of Hebron, CT Columbia, CT and all surrounding areas a fabulous Sunday Brunch inspired by the Italian culture of warmth and hospitality.
